How To Encourage Healthy Eating Habits

Healthy eating habits are crucial for overall well-being and long-term health. However, adopting and maintaining such habits is challenging — especially with junk food and unhealthy options available everywhere. Whether you want to lose weight, get more nutrition, or just kick the habit of junk-food gorging, follow these healthy eating habits.

1. Choose Fresh, Local Produce

To maximize nutrition and flavor, always opt for fresh, local, in-season produce over imported options. Local produce often has a distinct burst of taste and is chock-full of vitamins and minerals you may not find in canned foods or GMO crops. Buying local also supports the local economy — both farmers and local produce stores or grocers.

At DLJ Produce, we work with local growers and deliver to local grocers nationwide.  Our goal to provide the finest, freshest produce 365 days a year for you to enjoy.

2. Plan Ahead

A surefire way to fail in your pursuit of healthy eating habits is failure to plan ahead. When you don’t plan, you’re often tempted to choose quick food options — fast food, junk food, and delivery — which aren’t exactly healthy.

That’s why it’s so important to plan your meals. When you grocery shop, have some recipes in mind. This will keep you away from unhealthy food and locked into your healthy eating habits. Make multiple meals at the beginning of the week, so all you have to do is pop them in the microwave. It’s just that easy.

3. Eat Fruits and Veggies

If your ideal meal has only bread and meat, chances are that you’re not exactly a healthy eater. When you eat too much meat and bread, or you have a diet devoid of fruits and veggies, you probably don’t get the vitamins and nutrients that your body craves. The same thing if you find that everything on your plate is brown — that’s a surefire sign that you’re eating too much-fried food.

If you’re ever in doubt, just look at the color of the food on your plate. If you see greens or vibrant colors, you’re probably eating much healthier. If you don’t see any color variety, add raw fruits/veggies or Sauté something and add it to your meal.

4. Use the 5-2-1-0 Method

Even if you’re eating healthy and on track with your goals, slipping happens every so often. But if you want to make this an exception rather than commonplace, use the 5-2-1-0 method. This method states that you should:

1- Eat 5 helpings of fruits and veggies a day — preferably fresh.
2- Spend less than 2 hours a day on screen time.
3- Exercise at least 1 hour a year.
4- Drink 0 sugary drinks a day. Juices are fine but skip the sodas, energy drinks, or juice cocktails.
